In theory, any song that has been released on the Internet could become a song in StepMania. However, there are some things that have been done to songs in order to be put on a machine.

Length Edit

While there is a not a specified length for songs, several users have asked for the songs to be around the DDR standard, which is about 1:30-2:00 minutes. However, If your song is 2:30-4:99, it is a Long Version, Which takes 2 turns. Anything over 4:99 is a MARATHON, Which takes 3 stages.

DifficultyEdit

You can choose from different types of difficulty while you play. When you are looking through songs, you change change the difficulty of the song (if that specific songs will allow you to) by simply pressing up or down on your arrows. This way, you don't need to re-boot the game every time you want to change the level of difficulty you play. The more "foot" icons you see - the harder. Green= easy, Yellow= medium, Red = Hard.
